The film’s tagline says it won’t allow you to move. Sure, it won’t. For you’d be rendered stupefied through the assault that the film is. Take our advice: give it a miss.
Somu (Bhaswar Chatterjee) is always belittled by his elitist wife (Sonali Chaudhuri). On a visit to his father's old property in a village somewhere in the outskirts, Sonali humiliates and eventually ousts Soumitra Chatterjee, who was once sheltered by Bhaswar's father. She also kills a man while trying to save her daughter from a crazy man's antics. Angered by his wife behaviour, Somu leaves the house and goes missing only to send over a will to his daughter on her birthday that states, she's the sole heir to all his property.
There is such a thing as too melodrama. And Partha Sarathi Joarder’s Amar Prithibi has an abundance of it. The result is two hours of exaggerated drama that you don't want to sit through. The film starts with a young girl Disha, getting an anonymous phone call. She is asked to meet the caller, a lawyer, who hands her over a will that her dad left for her. Now, the film transitions into flashback and drags it for over one and a half hours. Somu, a doctor by profession, visits his paternal village Bokulpur, with his wife and daughter. Situations start to turn worse, almost predictably, as Somu's snooty wife insults almost everyone in the village thus labeling herself as an arrogant and disrespect woman. Throughout the film, Amar Prithibi drags, bores and typecasts city dwellers as air-headed and uptight. Although it boasts of a good cast in form of Soumitra Chatterjee, Bhaswar Chatterjee and Monami Ghosh, the script doesn’t allow anyone much sanity. A jerky editing, bad cinematography (a song sequence oscillates between monochrome and colour) and to top it all, a bad script- Amar Prithibi hovers over an idea but never really gets to the point. Random characters emerge, everyone with an oh-so-sad story to tell and then they either die or sidelined. Eitherway, they never show up on screen again. Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee, the only saving grace of the film, does justice to his role.
